MEDICAID REDETERMINATION FAQS
Medicaid redetermination, also called Medicaid renewal, is when the state checks if you still qualify for Medicaid. You’ll get a letter or packet in the mail asking you to confirm your information (like income, address, and who lives with you).
- It happens on a set schedule (often every 6 months, check your letter for your due date).
- You must fill out the forms and send them back within one month.
- If you don’t renew by the deadline stated in your letter, your coverage will stop.
If you have Medicaid because you receive SSI (Supplemental Security Income), you usually do not have to complete a separate Medicaid renewal. You stay covered as long as your SSI stays active.
The renewal/redetermination due date is different for everyone. Look for your Medicaid redetermination letter in the mail. The due date is written in that letter.
- Open mail right away. Don’t throw it out.
- Complete and return all forms by the due date to keep your coverage.
- If you moved, update your address with your state (or Medi-Cal) so you don’t miss your letter.
- Many people renew every 6 months. Mark your calendar for the next date.

All AHF patients nationwide, who have healthcare coverage through Medicaid either through Medicaid fee-for-service or a Medicaid managed care plan. But, not everyone has to send forms every time. States first try to renew you automatically using data they already have. If that works, you may not need to do anything.

Because if you don’t complete your redetermination (renewal) on time, your Medicaid can stop. That means doctor visits, medicines, and lab tests may not be covered.
