BERNARD STANLEY HOYES Artist statement

My Artistic concerns have been with expressing spiritual testimony. Using Contemporary expressions to be the driving force. Establishing a Visual Voice that speak, that recall my inner spirit as it beckons into worlds and regions, sacred and sanctified, to connect to the life force as a guide.

As a result my new works have gotten transformative.
Proof being, a selection of the Revival series Paintings was brought to life on Stage as an interdisciplinary performance, using Visual Arts, Dance, Video, Drums and Voices.
The production titled, “Se7en Paintings, a Story in Performance”. The production premiered at the Ford Amphitheater Stage in Los Angeles in 2012.

New insights in my practice of the Painting discipline have since emerged as a result. A Modernist discourse has quickly evolved. Templates harkening back to the exploration that produced Rag series of the Seventies, including Raw Materials, Raw textures and Printmaking technology have appeared.Working Internationally to get urban communities to focus on their Localities, from Palm Springs Art Commission to Kingston Creative to express themselves with Murals and street art.

Watercolors as a raw medium on Jumbo board, is methophorically placed in a bullhorn to amplified commentaries on Climate Change. As exhibited at San Bernardino County Museum 2019-2020
A unified science has appeared, charged with all my art that went before, including neglected concepts. A Synthesis of varied mediums, as expressed in the colored Bronze “Roots of Pegasus” and of late the Monumental Stainless Steel, Aluminum, Acrylic Lucite and Limestone commission by Kingston Restoration in Jamaica.

I would like to continue to explore the synthesis of the Multidisciplinary mediums, free from financial demands of my everyday life for a few months.

BIO: Chidi Ukwuoma is an interdisciplinary artist born and raised in Los Angeles. Working across ceramics, painting, photography, print-based processes, sculptural materials, and sound, his practice examines memory as both a personal and collective structure. His work considers how images, objects, symbols, and cultural forms carry history, transmit meaning and shift across time.

Ukwuoma is particularly interested in the relationship between the individual and society, drawing from mythology, ritual, music, material culture, and inherited visual languages. Moving between representation and abstraction, he recontextualizes familiar forms to produce new narratives. Across mediums, his work often treats the object as a vessel, a site where memory, material, and cultural experience are held, transformed, and reimagined.

In addition to his visual practice, Ukwuoma works with sound and vinyl records, extending his interest in memory, repetition, and transmission into audio-based forms.

BIO

Melvino Garretti (b. 1946 in Los Angeles, CA) creates ecstatic ceramic sculptures and assemblage pieces. The artist’s multidisciplinary practice emerged out of the social fabric of South-Central Los Angeles in the mid-1960s, formally beginning during his studio with Studio Watts, a pioneering arts-driven collective created to serve the local community in the wake of the 1965 Watts Rebellion. Garretti then went on to focus on ceramics at Great Barrington Pottery in Massachusetts and earned his MFA from the San Francisco Art Institute in 1978.

Often using colorful glazes, the artist’s gestural marks mine the improvisational pacing of free jazz, influenced by Garretti’s engagement with Leimert Park’s historic jazz scene and its Pan-Afrikan futurist aesthetics. In the 1980s, the artist began making wall mounted ceramic masks incorporating African textiles sourced from his aunt’s collection, imbuing a traditional form with personal references. Expertly crafted and rich with experience, observations, history, and music, Garretti’s work nevertheless maintains a powerfully frenetic effervescence. His expressionistic style imbues his totemic and polymorphic forms with a lively chaos begetting surprising relationships.

Bio: I was gifted with an impeccable eye for color. My dressmaking and photography skills also enhance my creative combinations and interpretations. My quilts are my babies lovingly conceived, tenderly nurtured and individually named based on their details.
Today, my quilts are masterpieces, alive with color, original designs and meticulous execution. I create exquisite, one-of-a-kind quilts incorporating a combination of inspiration and preparation, delicately blended with “ladylike perspiration.”

I co-founded an African American quilting guild named, Zuri, which means “beautiful” in Swahili in Nashville. My quilts have been on exhibit in the Nashville International Airport, the Frist Art Museum in Nashville and the Chattanooga African American Museum.

Alfreda Lanoix is a Black, Queer artist based in Los Angeles, CA. She specializes in abstract art that derives from life experience. Her work embraces a duality of love, spirituality, trauma and healing.

Painting has become a retuge for Alfreda, who is 64 years old. When speaking on her work Alfreda has said "My art is so full of the riches I've lived, the pain I've endured and the JOY l've experienced. My art is healing and holding space for others to heal. I am driven by the all-ness of love. My Art has felt racism, it's raw, yet beautiful. Life is beautifully beautiful in spite of, my art is a reminder of that."

Bio: Michael Massenburg was born in San Diego, raised in South Central Los Angeles, lived in San Bernardino and later resided to Inglewood. He pursued his studies at California State University, Long Beach, and the Otis School of Art and Design. Michael began his career at the Watts Towers Arts Center, influenced by the Watts Rebellion, the Black Art Movement of the 1960s, and the 1992 Los Angeles Uprising. He developed his social practice through art-making, teaching, lectures, community organizing, and activism for various organizations and causes.
Massenburg's interest is in historical, cultural, and personal narratives. His art practice fluctuates between painting, collage, photography, and assemblage. He incorporated various materials from found objects with traditional practices. Michael has exhibited in galleries, universities, and museums, completed private commissions, and created public art projects throughout the United States and abroad. One of his most recent exhibitions was for the Dak'Art 14th Edition Biennial of Contemporary African Art in Dakar, Senegal. Some of his work included public art commissions for Metro, DCA, Kia Forum, and the Intuit Dome in Inglewood. He receives various grants and awards, including the Art Matters Foundation, New York, Los Angeles Lakers Youth Foundation, and California Arts Council. He was recently honored by the city of Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs COLA Individual Master Artist Project Grantee for an exhibition for summer 2023.
