Nominee: Daniel Finn

Department: Department of Medicine/Healthcare Centers

Submitted by: Dierdre Wallace-Hines

In the past few months since Dr. Dalilah Restrepo left, Daniel Finn has been the unsung hero of the Manhattan & Queens Healthcare Centers. Many patients were loyal to Dr. Restrepo and sad to see her leave. Some were mad and debating if they wanted to come back. Many of the patients come from lifestyles where they eat stress and crisis for breakfast and chaos for lunch. Trusting new people is not an easy task. Dan worked with the resistance and used the resources available rallying the AHF staff and the ACQC staff to assist and support the patients and team throughout the transition. Even through additional staffing changes and constant shortage, Dan has been the glue of the team. He won over the confidence and trust of the patients. One commented, “I was not going to come back, but I’m glad I gave Dan a try.” Others comment, “he’s awesome.” Recently, a patient commented that he did not want to like Dan because of how much he loved Dr. Restepo. He said’ “it’s still hard, but he can see he is going to like Dan Dan’s calm demeanor and leadership have kept the goals of our AHF HCC on track. He developed a great rapport with the patients and he is invested in improving outcomes. He continues to lead discussions with pharmacy, sales, case management, HCC and affiliate administration focusing on patient care and satisfaction. Dan has been a great fit, an “out of the box” thinker and leader who is open to discussion, critique and change. Dan created a suggestion box and reads every comment. He involves the team in the plan of action and celebrates successes with the team. Hopefully, with recognition, we can celebrate him as a person/leader who goes “Above & Beyond.”

Nominee: IT

Department: Information Technology

Submitted by: Mike McVicker-Weaver

The IT team was superbly organized and responsive for the Baltimore opening. Vachik was always the first on the line for our weekly calls, even before myself who was the host. The whole team was incredibly quick to respond via email or phone and always directly addressed the concern. Robert was particularly accommodating to our on site needs and made several trips to complete the job. He even single handedly conquered the mountain of cardboard and packing materials that needed to disappear the night before the grand opening. I couldn’t ask for a more responsive team. They were committed to completing the IT work, making sure we were operational, and that our IT equipment was neat and placed where it made most sense. This enabled our office to have a smooth grand opening and roll out of client centered services.

Lori was an amazing caseworker that created a safe, inclusive space for me at my first appointment last week. In addition, she was very clear about her role and how she could assist me during my phase of unemployment and still trying to manage my HIV care. Her tips and next steps were essential to my mental health and I feel much better about getting through a tough time in my life. I am aware of all the resources I have as an AHF patient and also as a person that needs help from social services to make it through. As people living with HIV, we face a lot of discrimination when trying to access services, but her demeanor and tips on how to navigate the system have taken away a lot of my anxiety. I know I have huge support from Lori.

Nelly took the appropriate steps to ensure the patient was aware of the change and confirm same day delivery. She kept constant communication between the provider, patient, and courier until the prescription was complete. Both the provider and patient were pleased with her efficiency and urgency. Actions like these are what separates AHF from other pharmacies. We go above and beyond for our patients to ensure they receive optimal care and service. Because of Nelly’s meticulous steps, the patient received his medication on time and was able to initiate his new therapy. Great job, Nelly!

An irate patient from Georgia was travelling in California and ran out of his medication. He was upset because his pharmacy had not filled his medication on time. AJ was able to process the claims successfully and dispense the needed medication to the patient on time. AJ communicated with the patient clearly so that patient expectations were met. AJ’s actions may have resulted in patient retention. AJ’s actions ultimately ensured the patient would remain adherent to his ARV regimen. This level of care is the standard we should set for all patients to receive. Hats off to AJ!
Nominee: Matthew Santos

Department: Public Health Division

Matthew Santos is the Laboratory Technician for the Western Public Health Laboratory. Wellness Centers in Los Angeles, Oakland, and Las Vegas send clients’ blood specimens to Matthew to be processed on the Abbott Architect, which can detect acute HIV infections that would otherwise be missed by a rapid test. Specimens from Oakland and Las Vegas have to be shipped via FedEx in a timely manner to ensure the specimens are kept at the proper temperature. Yesterday, FedEx unexpectedly refused to deliver specimens from Las Vegas that had arrived at the FedEx facility in Los Angeles. After trying to speak with a FedEx representative, Matthew decided to drive to the FedEx facility and personally picked up the shipment. If Matthew had not retrieved the shipment, the specimens would have been rejected and the clients would have to return to the Wellness Center for re-testing. Matthew’s commitment to providing high-quality laboratory services for Wellness Center clients was once again reaffirmed. The Western Public Health Laboratory highlights AHF’s commitment to cutting-edge medicine. Detecting acute HIV infections using the Abbott Architect is paramount to curbing the HIV epidemic. Clients infected with HIV are at their most infectious during the acute phase. Matthew Santos’ willingness to retrieve Wellness Center clients’ blood specimens after FedEx refused to deliver the specimens in a timely manner demonstrates his devotion to the clients who trust AHF.

Juan Larios from Facilities is overseeing the installation of new air ducts at Wellness on Western. Juan asked me if a Western staff member would be available at 5:00AM to open the gate for the contractors. Without hesitation, Lauren Natoli agreed to come to the office by 5:00AM to ensure the contractors could begin working on the new air ducts. This is not the first time Lauren has made herself available to support other AHF departments, and this will not be the last. Lauren’s willingness to help, even when it is a last-minute request, exemplifies her commitment to AHF. It is imperative that the multiple departments under AHF engage in collaborative and supportive activities. No department can exist without the others. Lauren Natoli’s willingness to help Facilities is an example of one AHF departments supporting another AHF department. Working across departments demonstrates a strong commitment to AHF’s mission.

Michael, Eddie and Jason worked for weeks to make this year’s Brooklyn Pride festival and parade a huge success. Working closely with the Brooklyn Pride organization as a major sponsor, they ensured every detail was taken care of. When we learned we weren’t getting the bus, they worked with the events team to get a float. They made sure we had decorations for the float, a DJ, marketing and a good spot in the parade. Michael took the lead on sending information and instructions to all the staff and ensured everyone was where they were supposed to be all day. Eddie ensured we had testing at the festival. Jason assisted with every aspect of execution. They helped blow up tons of balloons for the marchers. Michael even assisted with packet pickup at the Brooklyn office for the 5k event and Eddie made sure the pre-pride party was a huge success. There were so many details and moving parts and they all worked together to make it come off without a hitch. Many of the staff in Brooklyn worked very hard to make This event is so important for AHF in Brooklyn. Our beautiful Champions float and all the marchers were seen by thousands of people. People cheered as we passed by and really loved the float. The marketing as a major sponsor helps us with brand recognition. We have a constant stream of new patients into the Brooklyn HCC and Pharmacy and this event is a big part of that. Great team!!

Patrick hand-wrote 300 codes and stapled business cards for East Los Angeles and Sunset pharmacy. Wellness Centers usually provides the codes, but they were so busy that Patrick offered to help. Patrick is a team-player and puts TEAM BEFORE SELF 🙂 Patrick has been essential in providing support to the Pharmacy department. He has a positive and respectful attitude and stays classy always. He has managed to convert Post-Exposure Prophylaxis patients to Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis therapy, which is a very recent Public Health concern. He provides effective communication even on weekends and checks in even if it’s just to say hello. We are very thankful for Patrick’s work ethic and discipline.
