When she was hired, it was around Christmas time and New Year’s Day and she still traveled to Los Angeles and dedicated time for training and on-boarding. The PHD Research team was assigned to document the status of all PHD staff, which means daily reporting between 8:00AM and 10:00PM PST for 200+ staff members. Mike McKany is based in Broward County, FL, which is three hours ahead of the PHD Research team in Los Angeles County, CA. Mike has been immediately accessible to PHD Research to complete the daily PHD staff database, often until midnight EST. Mike demonstrates his commitment to serve AHF clients during this emergency while remaining imperturbable. PHD Research is successful in its emergency response role because of PHD leaders like Mike McKany. | While AHF regularly tackles infectious disease and epidemics, COVID-19 tests the limits of this organization and the Public Health Division. Random Act of Kindness. | Ms. Stern, helped a person in need who was not a client/patient with AHF. She assisted two medical assistants (Sophia Vega and Cassandra Perez) to give a man aid who needed it. During admin time, it was noticed by these ladies that there was a man at the bus stop across the street from the HCC who was struggling. This man was wheelchair bound but he was not in his wheelchair but on the bus bench trying his best to put on pants he had gotten from the Goodwill store. He could not get the pants up and was there on the bench without any pants on. His wheelchair rolled into the busy main street. While all this was going on, traffic had stopped due to a train passing but no one stopped to help this man. Even the city bus came but the bus driver drove around the wheelchair and kept going. Ms. Stern (and the medical assistants), with gloves in hand, hastily went across the street to help the man. They helped him dress, got the wheelchair out of the street and placed the man back into his chair. He gave them a bi |

Random Acts of Kindness Hard working, compassionate, giving and quick thinking. |
Ms. Sophia Vega and Ms. Cassandra Perez, both Medical Assistants of the AHF OPK HCC came to the aide and rescue of a man in need. During administration time, both were doing their work when Ms. Perez notice out of her office window a man who was alone, seated on the bench at the bus stop across the street from the HCC. She could see that the man was partially dressed, undressed from the waist down, struggling to sit sit up and was unable to dress himself. He tried several times to put his pants on but was only able to put one pant leg in but not the other. In his attempt his wheelchair rolled into the street. (The bus that eventually came paused but the bus driver never stopped but went around the wheelchair). Ms. Vega called the non-emergency number of law enforcement to report this man needing assistance (but the aid of law enforcement never came until much later after he was already helped). Working as PIC without PIC benefits, as a staff pharmacist, in itself is above and beyond. | Vahe is the kindest person I know. He dispenses so much of himself into others. His good energy is infectious. Not only is he pleasant to work with, but he’s as bright as a Chanel suit taking an evening gondola ride. He is clinically up-to-date, quick as rattlesnake on a hot Arizona day, and a person we can all trust. In between working as the PIC of Hollywood, ensuring the metrics are up to par, staff is enjoying work, and providers are attended to- Vahe is the pharmacist we should all strive to be like. He tirelessly reaches out to those at risk for falling out of care and encourages them to attend their appointments and be adherent to their plan of care, thereby reducing the community viral load and progressing us toward our goal of ending the HIV epidemic. | This past month, he completed 289 calls, 113 texts, 18 F2F visits, 67 successful contacts and identified/assisted 6 retention patients who had moved (180-day report) with transfer to another AHF HCC. From this 180-day report, 27 patients attended their first retention apt and 32 attended their second one during the month of February. Even more striking to me than the numbers, though, are the stories behind some of these patients. Please see a couple of Lewis’ success stories: A 25-year-old African American MSM lost in care from Spring of 2018 and was brought back to care with multiple challenges include depression, homelessness drug dependence. Due to his challenges, transportation was a huge barrier, as he couldn’t rely on the services of others all the time and he was in Safe house for young LGBTI. Outstanding performance for a patient in need of a respiratory medical device. Ms. Judy McKnight, Registered Medical Assistant/ Referral Coordinator at HCC North Miami Beach, upon recognizing a problem immediately assessed the situation with a non-participating PHP health plan vendor, which there was no follow up on vendor’s behalf. Ms. McKnight promptly contacted three different participating vendors, collected all necessary documents and was able to successfully obtain the needed equipment for patient/ PHP member in a timely manner. This situation, if not handled swiftly, may have caused an emergency room visit or hospital stay if not for her analytical thinking and quick response. | Nominee’s act of recognizing a high-priority situation and her prompt attention-to-detail improved the access to care for a PHP health plan member. One Friday evening I was having a hard time getting meds sent for a homeless patient. He had a history of non compliance and I wanted to ensure he got his meds sent to the pharmacy the same day.
