Nominee: Alexander Goncalvez
Nominee Division: Public Health Division
Submitted by: Adam Sukhija-Cohen
Alex Goncalvez oversees all fixed site testing and mobile testing in the United States, which conducted more than 100,000 rapid HIV tests for AHF patients in 2019 alone. As the coronavirus epidemic hit the US, Alex was tasked with transitioning from rapid HIV testing for patients to rapid COVID-19 antibody testing for AHF staff. While there are similarities between the two types of tests, there are many nuanced differences that Alex and his team quickly and successfully addressed to ensure the first COVID-19 test would be administered without any issues. First, Alex ensured a database was set up to collect appropriate staff details and test results for future analyses. Second, Alex personally oversaw protocol trainings for his team of testers who had to utilize three different rapid COVID-19 antibody tests. And third, Alex coordinated the testing schedules so that all frontline AHF staff across the nation could get tested every two weeks. Alex and his team had an extremely small time frame to set up, implemenWithout Alex’s well-organized, functional, and effective rapid HIV testing program, implementing a nationwide COVID-19 staff testing program would have had serious barriers in both its setup and implementation. Instead, Alex demonstrated a new level of leadership on behalf of AHF to be nimble and guaranteed cutting-edge services to AHF staffers in the middle of a deadly epidemic. Thanks to Alex, over 2,500 rapid COVID-19 antibody tests have been conducted–and more are on their way to an AHF site near you!
